ABOUT FRANCESCA

Francesca G. Varela is an author, nature writer, and freelance copy editor based in the Portland area. After growing up in the forests of West Linn, Oregon, Francesca earned a B.A. in Environmental Studies and a minor in Creative Writing from the University of Oregon. During college, Francesca had pieces published in campus publications including Envision: Environmental Journalism and The Ecotone Journal of Environmental Studies. Francesca continued her academic pursuits at the University of Utah, where she taught an undergrad writing course for two years and earned an M.A. in Environmental Humanities. Francesca wrote her cli-fi novel, Blue Mar, as her thesis project before graduating in 2018. After grad school, Francesca spent four years working in communications at environmental nonprofits, and she had pieces published in the Buckman Journal and the Wayfarer Magazine. At the moment, Francesca is keeping busy by writing a new novel, copy editing for clients, and managing indiebookstoresearch.com, a directory of all the independent bookstores in the Western USA!

ABOUT CASHEW

Cashew the terrier-mix provides emotional support and cuddles. Francesca adopted Cashew from the Oregon Humane Society in 2021, and since then they’ve spent almost all of their time together. Cashew loves playing with her carrot toy, going for walkies, swimming in the river, and playing with her corgi-cousin, Basil. For updates on Cashew, check out Francesca’s Instagram page!
